In healthy teeth and gums, the tissue embraces the tooth firmly, this tight union prevents food particles from getting in between the gum and the tooth. It also protects the parts of the tooth underneath the tissue. As the gum moves away from the tooth, <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/chapter\/10.1007\/978-3-030-20091-6_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">parts of the tooth that are not made to withstand exposure<\/a> to elements such as bacteria, acids and sugars are exposed in the same way upper part of the tooth are. This situation can lead to hypersensitivity to thermal changes, decay or wear of the tooth root and aesthetic problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gingival recession can occur in people of all ages. In a large percentage of cases, it is observed in people who have a very good oral hygiene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Causes of gingival recession:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Overzealous tooth brushing or use of a hard bristle toothbrush<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gum disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Previous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4944726\/#__sec4title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">orthodontic treatments<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accumulation of calculus or tartar<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poorly adjusted prostheses<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genetics (people who have very thin gums or bone)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muscle attachments that pull constantly on the tissue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Treatment of gingival recession:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first step is to modify an overly aggressive brushing technique or to correct an ill-fitting prosthesis. Rather than causing the tissue to grow back, it prevents the problem from progressing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In cases where there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gildentalclinic.com\/en\/blog\/how-to-take-care-of-your-gums-and-prevent-periodontal-disease\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"747\">gum disease<\/a>, the patient should be treated first by a dentist&nbsp; so that bacterial plaque and calculus are removed from the tooth and root surfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once all the causative factors have been modified, a gum graft can be performed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Gum Graft Procedure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This procedure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3722996\/#__sec8title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obtains tissue from another part of the patient\u2019s mouth<\/a> \u2013 usually from the palate \u2013 and places it on the area of recession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This same procedure can be done using allografts (tissue from a corpse) or collagen-based materials. This avoids having to obtain the tissue from the palate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the procedure is performed and the root is completely or partially covered, the firm union of the gum to the tooth is restored, allowing for protection against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gildentalclinic.com\/en\/diagnosis-and-prevention-of-tooth-decay\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"8009\">cavities <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gildentalclinic.com\/en\/dental-sensitivity\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"8005\">dental hypersensitivity<\/a> and improved <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gildentalclinic.com\/en\/smile-design-and-smile-improvement\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"7902\">aesthetics of the smile<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The success of the procedure will depend on the patient.
