A small dental practice that began three decades ago in Los Yoses, San Pedro de Montes de Oca, Gil Dental Group is now a consolidated dental center with two large clinics (in San Pedro and Escazú), a state-of-the-art dental laboratory, and a group of certified specialists.
After studying Dentistry at the University of Costa Rica and completing his Master’s degree (M.S.) at the University of Indiana in Fixed and Removable Partial Prosthodontics and with a Minor in Dental Materials (1979-1981), Dr. Lucas Gil returned to Costa Rica with the idea of establishing his own clinic.
“We chose to develop our headquarters in Los Yoses, San Pedro de Montes de Oca, near the Italian Embassy, as the site was well-positioned to accept patients seeking full dental treatment,” says Dr. Gil. “This site connected us with local neighborhoods like Barrio Francisco Peralta and Barrio Escalante, and was also accessible to nearby regions like Barrio la Guaria in Moravia and Barrio el Prado in San Pedro.
After 13 successful years, thanks to mostly word of mouth referrals (pun intended!), Dr. Gil’s client list expanded rapidly, and the original clinic was no longer large enough to sustain the growth of the business. As a result, we decided to move our practice to a new, larger location in San Pedro.
“In the end we chose a property in Barrio Dent, San Pedro de Montes de Oca, due to its proximity to the highway and the parking space it offered. We also took into account that most of our patients lived in nearby areas and were comfortable with the site,” says Dr. Gil.
Our new location was established in 1994. At the same time, the San Pedro dental clinic’s team increased from five to fourteen people, including Prosthodontists, a Maxillofacial Surgeon, an Endodontist, a Pediatric Dentist, Dental Assistants and Laboratory Technicians, which allowed us to expand our services to all specialties except orthodontics.
In the mid-1990s, the development of San José’s western suburbs presented new opportunities in Escazú and Santa Ana. In 2000, the Gil Dental Clinic in Escazú was opened to facilitate access to customers in those regions. See our Escazú page for more info.
Treatments offered: Mouth Reconstruction
Prosthodontics:
Is the dental specialty in charge of complete oral reconstruction.
Dental Implants:
The oral rehabilitation treatments offered at Gil Dental Clinic were expanded in 1992 with the introduction of dental implants, which had been recently developed in Sweden and approved by the American Dental Association ADA. Gil Dental Clinic is a pioneer in Costa Rica in the use of dental implants for complete or partial rehabilitations. We started providing implants in San Pedro, but they are also offered at the Gil Dental Clinic in Escazú.
The various dental specialties were introduced first in San Pedro and then in the Escazú Clinic.
- Periodontics: As important as it is to take care of the teeth themselves, one must not neglect the tissues that are located around the teeth, which provide support for your glistening chiclets. The gums, the periodontal ligament, and the alveolar bone all fall under the jurisdiction of Periodontics.
- Endodontics: There’s a soft tissue inside your teeth, often referred to as the “pulp”, that comprises nerves and blood vessels. If this tissue is exposed—whether due to decay or a fracture of the tooth—it can become infected and cause immense pain, in addition to putting the tooth at risk. In this case, it is recommended to remove the tissue. We have an endodontics specialist to perform this procedure at both our San Pedro and Escazú Clinics.
Our goal is to maintain healthy patients, so we always emphasize preventive care over procedures:
